Home BaseballSt. Louis Cardinals A Letter to Adam Wainwright

A Letter to Adam Wainwright

by Jason McGrew

Dear Adam,

I know you’ll probably not see this and read it.  So I’m also writing this for the true fans who revere you as a person and a baseball player.  I’m writing this on behalf of the fans who are disgusted by what has taken place.

I regret to see that you’ve had to disable your Twitter account due to hateful comments from so-called fans.  Those “fans” do not represent the majority of us that revere you as an all-time Cardinal great.  We revere you as such for your career on the field and your character and charity work off of it.  You’ve dedicated your entire career to the city of St. Louis and the St. Louis Cardinals.  You frankly deserve a better send off from the fans than you have been receiving.
Adam, you have provided us with many great memories over the years.  Your strikeout of Brandon Inge to get the final out of the 2006 World Series will go down as one of greatest moments in franchise history.  Your next start will be your 400th.  You’re just 2 wins shy of 200.  You’ve struck out over 2000 batters. You’ve been an All-Star 3 times, a gold glove winner twice and even once a silver slugger.  All of this you’ve done in a Cardinal uniform.
We can be honest about this.  This season has not gone the way the fans, the team and you individually would have hoped.  That said, there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played.  It’s far too early to pack it in and give up on the season.  I can promise you that the real fans among us have nothing bad to say about you.  We hope you pitch well, but when you do not we’ll deal with it.  It’s baseball, not life or death.
Three years from now, you will put on your well earned red jacket.  Five years from now, you will receive a lot of Hall of Fame votes.  The real fans will always look back fondly upon the Adam Wainwright era in St. Louis.  We hope you remain a part of this franchise in some way for decades to come.
From the real fans, thank you!
