Analyzing the Cardinals Week 3 Performance

by Jason McGrew

The third week of the season is complete.  The Cardinals have an off day today before starting a three series west coast road trip.  Let’s examine how they did in week 3.

Record: 3-4 (8-11)
Run Differential: +1 (-2)
Total Score: 35-34 (91-93)
Average Runs Scored: 5
Average Run Allowed: 4.857
While every run counts, 14 of them did come in one game.  Aside from that outburst, the Cardinals averaged just 3.5 runs per game.  Hopefully, that big run total is the start of the team getting hot.  Even with that 14 run game, they only finished one run up in run differential for the week.  That means they were -8 for the week going into that game on Wednesday.
Individual Performances
C – Willson Contreras: .391/.500/.826 (.274/.357/.452) HR 2 (2) Season OPS+ 123, DRS 0, CS 56% (League Average is 22%)
What a difference a week makes.  Willson Contreras is red hot hot right now.
1B – Paul Goldschmidt: .217/.333/.435 (.313/.439/.493) HR 1 (2) Season OPS+ 159, DRS -1
It was a pedestrian week for Goldy.  Even in a bad week he had a .768 OPS.
2B – Brendan Donovan: .381/.435/.524 (.270/.329/.413) HR 0 (2) Season OPS+ 105, DRS 0
The human Swiss army knife had a very productive week.  As they keep saying, put him anywhere on the field and he’ll make a play.
3B – Nolan Arenado: .231/.286/.269 (.293/.349/.413) HR 0 (2) Season OPS+ 111
DRS +2
Rough week for Arenado.  Hopefully, he heats up out west.
SS – Tommy Edman: .250/.357/.500 (.274/.366/.436) HR 1 (2) Season OPS+ 122, DRS +2
Tommy had a very impactful week.  He is destroying LH pitching.
OF – Tyler O’Neill: .263/.364/.421 (.276/.333/.431) HR 0 (2) Season OPS+ 111, DRS -1
TON actually had a decent week.  I particularly love that .364 obp for the week.
OF – Dylan Carlson: .167/.250/.278 (.237/.293/.316) HR 0 (0) Season OPS+ 69, DRS +2
In a crowded OF, DC3 is going to have to produce more at the plate in order to get consistent playing time.
OF – Jordan Walker: .150/.191/.150 (.269/.310/.388) HR 0 (2) Season OPS+ 93, DRS -4
The phenom has cooled off.  Now, we’ll see what he’s really made of.  How quickly will he make the adjustments?
OF – Lars Nootbaar: .222/.588/.556 (.231/.565/.462) HR 1 (1) Season OPS+ 190, DRS -4
Only Lars Nootbaar can have an OBP over .500 on a week that he hits .222. In 23 plate appearances, he has walked an insane 10 times already.
OF – Alec Burleson: .182/.217/.364 (.250/.304/.481) HR 1 (2) Season OPS+ 114, DRS 0
Burleson has also cooled off a bit after a very solid start.
DH – Nolan Gorman: .320/.357/.520 (.316/.403/.649) HR 1 (5) Season OPS+ 187, DRS +1
Nolan Gorman’s breakout year continues with another great week.  He just keeps hitting and coming up big in clutch moments.
IF – Taylor Motter: .200/.333/.200 (.222/.300/.333) HR 0 (0) Season OPS+ 76, DRS +2
For a bench utility infielder, Motter really hasn’t been bad.  He has played well defensively.
C – Andrew Knizner: .167/.286/.167 (.125/.177/.125) HR 0 (0) OPS+ -14, DRS 0, CS 20%
Whatever, lol
SP – Miles Mikolas: GS 1 (4) IP 5.2 (20.0) ERA 3.18 (8.10) WHIP 1.588 (2.050) K 4 (19) BB 2 (5) Season FIP 4.93

The walk issue that plagued him in his first two starts of the season appears to be behind him now.
SP – Steven Matz: GS 1 (3) IP 5.2 (16.2) ERA 3.18 (6.48) WHIP 1.412 (1.800) K 6 (17) BB 5 (8) Season FIP 5.07
A better performance this week.

Jake had a much better week.  His remaining time in the rotation may be short as Adam Wainwright is returning soon.
RP – Andre Pallante: G 2 (8) IP 2.0 (8.1) ERA 9.00 (7.56) WHIP 2.500 (1.920) K 3 (7) BB 3 (4) Season FIP 6.21
Optioned to AAA Memphis
RP – JoJo Romero: G 1, IP 1.2, ERA 0.00, WHIP 1.200, K 1, BB 1, FIP 3.93
Called up from AAA in place of Pallante
RP – Zack Thompson: G 3 (8) IP 4.0 (9.1) ERA 0.00 (0.00) WHIP 1.000 (1.286) K 7 (14) BB 1 (4) Season FIP 1.61

surrendering 2 HR cost him this week.
RP – Drew Verhagen: G 3 (9) IP 3.0 (8.2) ERA 0.00 (2.08) WHIP 0.333 (0.923) K 2 (10) BB 1 (2) Season FIP 1.71

So far, Stratton has been a decent arm coming out of the pen
RP – Giovanny Gallegos: G 2 (5) Saves 1 (1) IP 2.0 (5.0) ERA 0.00 (0.00) WHIP 0.000 (0.200) K 2 (8) BB 0 (0) Season FIP 0.13
Gio is off to a dominant start

Team hasn’t had enough late leads to really need the closer unfortunately.
Coming up this week: a west coast road trip starting Friday in Seattle.  They’ll also play the Giants this week.  Both teams are scuffling a bit.
