Chinea awarded Texas League Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Texas League has announced Springfield Cardinals catcher/first baseman Chris Chinea as Player of the Week for June 24 – July 1.

Chinea, 24, batted .368 in five games last week, including a 7-for-15 (.467) stretch after the all-star break. He led the Texas League in home runs (3) and was among league leaders in runs (4, T2nd), hits (7, T2nd), extra-base hits (3, T2nd), RBIs (4, 3rd), slugging (.842, 3rd) and OPS (1.242, 3rd).

The Miami, Florida native is batting .244 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs to go with a .736 OPS this season. He has nine doubles and 29 runs in 58 games. His 11 home runs are his single-season career high. Chinea is currently fourth in the Texas League in HR/AB ratio (1/18.64). He’s third on the Cardinals in home runs, fourth in RBIs, fifth in total bases (92), fifth in runs, fifth in hits (50), sixth in slugging (.449) and seventh in doubles (9).

Chinea was selected by St. Louis in the 17th round of the 2015 June Draft out of Louisiana State University.

Chinea joins first baseman John Nogowski and outfielders Victor Roache and Lane Thomas as Cardinals named Texas League Player of the Week this season.
