Saint Louis FC defeated western conference rivals Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,313 at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
It was a scoreless first half, with possession split evenly between the teams. There were many opportunities, but no breakthrough for either end. Saint Louis FC had eight shots with three on goal. Portland Timbers 2 had seven shots, with one on goal.
Irvin Herrera led the team in the first half, taking five of the eight shots. STL FC was strong on defense, only allowing one shot on goal – a long-range effort that Ryan Thompson saved spectacularly.
The second half proved better for STLFC as the home side earned a penalty in the 58th minute after Andy Thoma handled the ball in the box. Herrera stepped up and calmly put the ball past Timbers’ keeper Justin Luthy to give STLFC the lead with what proved to be the game-winner. The goal was Herrera’s ninth of the season, adding to his franchise record.
Herrera attributes his success to the fans. “It’s an amazing atmosphere we got here at home. They are like our 12th man, they motivate us so much to give it all, and we need to keep this winning streak at home and we hope the fans continue to come out and support us.”
