Ambush Defender Mattingly Earns 2nd Team All-MASL Honor

by St. Louis Ambush

St. Louis Ambush defender and Co-Captain Chris Mattingly has earned 2nd Team All-MASL honors for the 2016-17 season. Mattingly blocked 48 shots, good for second in the league in that category. The recently completed season was Mattingly’s fourth in Ambush teal. Prior to joining the Ambush in their 2013-14 inaugural season, Mattingly played for the St. Louis Illusion and Illinois Piasa. Chris appeared in 15 games for the Ambush this season, tallying two goals and four assists in addition to being a superb shot blocker.

Chris is a St. Louis native. He attended Chaminade High School and played youth soccer for the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. Mattingly spent his collegiate career at Drury University where he was team captain and earned the 2003-04 Defensive Player of the Year honor and the John E. Moore Award for his team leadership and dedication.

Mattingly said he’s proud to be named to the 2nd team. “Being voted to the 2nd All-MASL Team is an accomplishment I am very appreciative of considering that we play in a league full of competitive players many of whom are also deserving of this honor, however it is bitter sweet as I’d trade this recognition for a better outcome for our fans and team this season,” Chris said.

The Major Arena Soccer League announced the 2nd and 3rd All-MASL teams on Tuesday. Players were selected by vote of MASL personnel, Head Coaches and team personnel. The MASL is announcing post-season awards this week, leading up to the Ron Newman Cup Championship Series between the Baltimore Blast and Soles de Sonora Friday and Saturday. The complete list of awards is available at maslsoccer.com.
