(PRESS RELEASE)
The Southern Illinois Miners have announced they sold the contracts of relievers Pete Perez and Race Parmenter to the Atlanta Braves. Perez and Parmenter are the 28th and 29th players in the history of the Miners organization to have their contract selected by a major league organization. They are the third and fourth players of the 2013 Miners to leave for an organization joining Tyler Stubblefield (Padres) and Brandon Cunniff (Braves).
“I couldn’t be happier for Race and Pete”, said Miners manager Mike Pinto. “They both worked extremely hard for the Miners this season and were important parts of a lot of wins. Both continued to get better and deserved this opportunity.”
“Like us, the Braves look for good makeup guys to go with talent and they are getting two very quality people as well as very good pitchers”, added Pinto. “We wish them great success as they take their career to the next level.”
Perez signed with the Miners on June 29th, 2013 after finishing his career at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. For the Miners, Perez went 4-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 27 games and started once. He struck out 41 batters in 38 2/3 innings pitched and only walked 18 hitters. He gave up 34 hits and only allowed 17 runs (13 earned)
Parmenter signed with the Miners the day before on June 28th out of University of California, Irvine in Irvine, California. Parmenter was stellar out of the bullpen for the Miners as he went 3-1 with a 0.57 ERA in 20 games and was a candidate for Rookie of the Year in the Frontier League. He recorded six saves and struck out 27 batters in 31 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up only 16 hits and allowed eight runs (two earned) with eleven walks.
The Miners currently have eleven former players throughout major league organizations. Former Miners pitcher Tanner Roark reached the major leagues this season and went 7-1 with a 1.45 ERA in 14 appearances. He is the second former Miner to reach the major leagues (Clay Zavada in 2007 with Arizona).
“It is an honor and testament to our organization and our coaching staff that the Braves and so many major league affiliates have continued to come to the Miners to add players to their organizations”, said Pin
