Bishop Briggs Radiated Joy During Her St. Louis Champion Tour Stop

by Carrie Zukoski

Bishop Briggs brought all her dazzling energy to The Pageant in St. Louis on November 13 for her Champion tour supporting her just-released (Nov. 8) album of the same name. Decked out in — what else? — Champion sportswear — Briggs blasted out on stage kicking off the night with the high-energy, feel-good “Champion” as soon as the giant digital countdown clock on the large video screen struck 00:00.

Indie-pop singer, Briggs told the rapt crowd that she wrote “Champion” during one of the lowest points in her life and performing it was cathartic for her.

Briggs worked the stage nearly the entire concert running from side to side, jumping up and down, except when she slowed it down during an acoustic version of “Dream” which adoring fans lit up the room with their phone’s flashlights.

After sharing that “Jekyll & Hyde” was just released a couple of weeks ago, the crowd cheered loudly and Briggs seemed truly excited that people had heard of it already.

Flashing her huge smile throughout the night, Briggs’ joy at being on stage, performing her powerful, catchy songs, radiated into everyone’s hearts.

Hailing from Detroit, Jax Anderson, who you might recognize from her time with Flint Eastwood, opened the night at 7:30 p.m. Before singing, she cajoled the crowd to get on their feet saying “I feel like a comedian.” Her infectious energy and alt/synth/pop sound quickly captured the growing crowd. Before launching into “Monster,” she coached everyone in how to help out on the chorus by joining in loudly with “alright alright.”

The second act of the night, Miya Folick came on stage announcing that she was “feeling weird tonight. Hope you are, too.” Bathed in deep pink and blue hues, she started her set with a song about God. She then slipped into “Deadbody” and the melodic “Baby Girl” before another new song that she introduced as “it’s inevitable that life is going to break your heart.” Folick won’t fit easily into any category which makes her a singer/songwriter to keep on your list.
