Cardinals Expected To Release Greg Holland : Call Up Dakota Hudson

by Aaron Mullins

It was the signing we all wanted… And it completely backfired. I was one of the biggest fans of pursuing Greg Holland this past off-season, but it simply did not work out. First reported by Jon Morosi, the Cardinals are expected to release Holland later today and add Dakota Hudson to the 40-Man roster.

Dakota Hudson, @Cardinals No. 4 prospect according to @MLBPipeline, will join active roster today. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Holland was brought in to be the closer for the Cardinals in 2018 and many believed this was the move to push the Cardinals into contention, but Holland has been nothing short of a disaster this season. He currently sports a 7.92 ERA over 32 appearances. His walk rate is the highest it’s ever been in his career with 7.9 BB/9, while his strikeout rate is the lowest of his career at 7.9 K/9. With his release, the Cardinals will have to pay his remaining salary for the season.

If the move does allow the Cardinals to bring up Dakota Hudson, he will most likely be placed into a starting role after going 13-3 with a 2.50 ERA for AAA Memphis. He is listed as the #4 prospect for the Cardinals and he will have an opportunity to show exactly what he can do at the big league level. He could be in line to start against the Cubs this weekend.

Holland was supposed to be a difference maker for the Cardinals but unfortunately things didn’t work out.

What are your thoughts on his release?

Thanks for reading!
