Davenport, IA – The Peoria Chiefs tied the game in the sixth and ninth but gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth to lose to the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-4 on Monday night. The loss ends a nine-game, eight-day road trip with the Chiefs at 25-24 as they return home for a Tuesday double header.
The Chiefs put two on with one out in the top of the first against Leovanny Rodriguez but a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Quad Cities broke through against Johan Oviedo. Bryan De La Cruz led off with a single to left and Jonathan Lacroix walked. With one out, Jonathan Arauz doubled to right as De La Cruz scored before Lacroix was tagged out at the plate while attempted to leap over catcher Julio Rodriguez. Oviedo retired Corey Julks to end the inning with the Chiefs down 1-0.
After Quad Cities went to the bullpen the Chiefs tied the game in the sixth inning against Enoli Parades. Zach Kirtley singled with one out and scored on a double off the left-field wall by Rodriguez to tie the game 1-1.
The Chiefs loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth but didn’t score. Quad Cities started the bottom of the inning with a Julks single against reliever Fabian Blanco. Miguelangel Sierra singled and Michael Papierski put Quad Cities on top 2-1 with a double. Colton Shaver followed with a two-tun double for a 4-1 River Bandits lead.
Bryce Denton led off the Chiefs ninth inning with a double to right and moved to third on a one-out single by Irving Lopez. Scott Hurst cut the Quad Cities lead to 4-2 with a RBI single to left and Kirtley singled home Lopez for a 4-3 game. Elehuris Montero flew out to center before Rodriguez tied the game with a double off the left-field wall as Hurst scored. Parades got out of the inning as JR Davis popped up foul to first base.
Quad Cities started the bottom of the ninth with a strikeout before Arauz doubled to left off Bryan Dobzanski. Julks delivered the walk-off single with a base-hit to right as Arauz scored for the 5-4 win.
Oviedo took a no-decision as he allowed one run on four hits over five innings while walking five and striking out four. Blanco allowed three runs on four hits over 2 1/3 innings while striking out one. Bryan Dobzanski (3-2) allowed one run on three hits over one inning as he took the loss.
