Always smiling and always looking to have fun, Gordy Gurson seemed to be having quite the time of it recently with the USA indoor world cup win and scoring for fun in the Major Arena Soccer League with the St Louis Ambush (16 goals, 2 assists in 9 games). Then it all went wrong.
You can simply sense the sadness from indoor soccer player Gordy Gurson who was traded from St Louis Ambush to Cedar Rapids Rampage for cash considerations. “I didn’t have many options really, Andrew [Haines] sold me for cash and we had to do something quickly because of the 12 game rule which governs trades in the league” states Gurson, MASL rookie of the year in 2015.
It all looked like normal, Gurson tweeted a picture of himself and colleagues driving upto Milwaukee for the game against the Wave on January 9th, and yet a few comments after the game focused on him not playing. Then a more cryptic tweet hit his feed that maybe all is not well in the Ambush camp.
What’s done is done. The past is the past. Can only look forward #positive

The St Louis Ambush on Monday night posted numerous statuses on how Gurson had left the team and walked out. The Ambush proceeded to explain how they would not be releasing him from his contract with the team and expected him to play in their next game. Their own fans chided the clubs social media for airing the teams dirty laundry and the post was subsequently deleted and reworded.
This is the latest setback for the Ambush who despite being having a 1-9 record had reason to be optimistic after winning their first game against the Missouri Comets and looked more organized and disciplined under new coach Tony Glavin.
Many people initially summarized that it was the introduction of Glavin to the coaching staff that had caught Gurson’s ire and lead to the acrimony, yet Gurson said nothing could be further from the truth, “Tony was a great guy and a great coach. He was a good addition to the team and the organization needs him as he brings a lot to the table.” Gurson went on to add that outgoing coach Daryl Doran was let down by the players. “The record was the only thing against Daryl. He doesn’t play the games, the players do.”
I wanted to ask Gordy about the situation with owner Andrew Haines, I had heard rumors from other players that he paid his players only if they dressed and not if they are injured. I had even heard that he would save money by not turning on the heating at early morning practice at Vetta practice facility. “Well obviously I cannot speak about other players and their personal contracts, I was always paid by Andrew so I cannot complain. It was very cold some days at Vetta though!”
February 20th will be a date for all Ambush fans whom want to see Gurson again when his new team, Cedar Rapids Rampage visit the Family Arena. “I will always love the St. Louis crowd! They are like family to me and I can’t wait to see them when Cedar Rapids plays in St. Louis. I will stay as long as it takes to sign autographs and such for anybody that wants it after that game. I would love to play for the Ambush again under different circumstances. I hope all of my fans understand and respect my decision because I love them all!”
