The Southern Illinois Miners have announced that right-handed starter Tyler Lavigne has been named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, May 25th.
Lavigne, who came to the Miners following four seasons with the Normal CornBelters, has shined in his first two starts with Southern Illinois. On Tuesday, May 20th, Lavigne got the start on opening night at Rent One Park, earning the victory with six innings of work, surrendering six hits and just one unearned run while walking none and striking out three.
Then, on Sunday, May 25th, in his second start, Lavigne was even better. The Las Vegas native went deeper than any other Miners starter had gone into a game this season, twirling 7 1/3 innings of two-hit, shutout ball, fanning six and walking two against the Lake Erie Crushers in a series-sealing 4-0 Southern Illinois victory in Marion.
Lavigne’s honor is the first Frontier League weekly award for a Miner this season.
The Miners will travel up to Windy City for a three-game series against the Thunderbolts beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Matt Bywater will get the start in game one for Southern Illinois, opposed by Victor Larez.
