The Southern Illinois Miners came back from an early deficit to tie the game at 2-2 in the second inning, but a run in the third plus five more in the fourth gave the Schaumburg Boomers an 8-2 lead that stood up in an 8-3 loss at Rent One Park.
After Schaumburg took the early lead in the first (the first time all year the Miners did not score first in a game), the Miners tied the game in the second. Aaron Gates worked a walk, and was followed by consecutive singles off the bats of Steve Marino and Tyler Booth, the latter driving in a run to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Following two fielder’s choices resulting in one out, Jay Austin hit a fly ball to center field for a sacrifice, scoring Booth to make it 2-2.
But Schaumburg re-took the lead in the third and then piled on five more runs in the fourth, chasing starter Miguel Ramirez from the game with one out in the inning. The Miners bullpen of Britt Robertshaw, Stew Brase and Derrick Miramontes held the Boomers off the board from there, throwing a combined 5 2/3 scoreless frames with a total of seven strikeouts in that span.
The Boomers took the series two games to one. The Miners will next face the Lake Erie Crushers for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will face Todd Kibby in a matchup of lefties.
