The Cardinals have signed outfielder Matt Szczur (pronounced SEE-zur) to a minor-league contract today with an invite to Spring Training.
Outfielder Matt Szczur, former Cub, former Villanova two-sport star from South Jersey, has signed minor-league deal w St. Louis Cardinals. Includes big league invite. Was in camp with Phillies last year.
Szczur was released by the Phillies prior to the 2020 season after serving as a non-roster invitee during spring training. He’ll be invited to the Cardinals’ big-league camp in 2021 and will attempt to return to the majors for the first time since 2018.
Excited to start a new chapter with the @Cardinals!
Szczur made his MLB debut with the Cubs back in 2014 and was a bench bat with them for a little more than 4 seasons. In the middle of the 2017 season, he was traded to the Padres and was with them for the rest of 2017 and 2018.
Szczur spent the entire 2019 season in AAA for the Diamondbacks and did not play in 2020.
In his best season (2016), Szczur played in 107 games with the Cubs, batting for a slash line of .259/.312/.400 with five homers.
