Faye Webster’s Swirling Sounds Delighted St. Louis Fans

by Carrie Zukoski

A breath of fresh air blew through St. Louis at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room Sunday night, October 20, 2019, with the magical tunes of Faye Webster along with opener Jenny O.

Her Wikipedia page barely filled out, this Atlanta-based musician and singer is quickly becoming a name worth knowing (check out this Rolling Stone Sept. 11 piece). Early fans already know her trademark visor which makes her easily recognizable as the respectably-sized crowd learned. Webster shared that earlier in the day she and band members had been to a thrift store and someone asked her if anyone had ever told her she looked like Faye Webster. When she demurred, he said, “maybe it’s the visor.” She eventually assured him it was indeed her and promptly put him on the guestlist telling him her set started at 10 p.m. (it started at 9). Fortunately, he and his friends made it before her hour-long set was completely over.

The night consisted of Webster’s easy, fun, swirly bluegrass/rock/R&B/hip hop/melodic sounds and started with “She Won’t Go Away” from her 2017 self-titled album and moved into “Right Side of My Neck” off her newest album Atlanta Millionaires Club (released May 24, 2019).

Webster mixed in her wry humor between many of the songs. At one point she said it was her first time in St. Louis, although readily admitted she wasn’t quite sure where she was with her tour schedule keeping her on the go. She did, however, know she was in a room full of ducks and her keyboardist wore a duck shirt, “I couldn’t stop taking photos of her in front of ducks.”

The night’s fun continued when Tour Manager Noor joined on stage to play the triangle to perfection on “Both All the Time” to the delight of the crowd and Drummer Jenna showed off her masterful yo-yo skills. And, of course, a story about tumbleweeds was shared before launching into “Room Temperature.”

Faye Webster is the music you want playing at your next fun, relaxed, easy-going dinner party.

Just after 8 p.m., Jenny O. opened the night for the growing crowd with a 40-minute set. This softly-spoken singer-songwriter out of L.A. performed solo with her melodic tunes and often lilting vocals. She shared that about halfway through she’d abandoned her setlist, saying a friend of hers in Columbia had passed away earlier this summer and that he’d have been so excited that she was playing the Duck Room before launching into “Opposite Island.” While mostly quieter songs, Jenny O. could also unleash much louder chords and vocals as shown on “Good Love.”
