Most people don’t realize that the Cardinals were in third place in the NL Central last season. Cardinals fans seem to think that the Cubs are the only team that we should be worried about. But it’s not. Not by a long shot.
Earlier today the Brewers acquired OF Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins in exchange for four prospects including Lewis Brinson who is currently ranked as the #18 prospect in all of baseball according to Baseball America. Yelich was obviously upset when the Marlins had already traded Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees and Marcel Ozuna to the Cardinals. He didn’t want to be a part of a rebuild and expressed his disappointment.
Meer hours after this trade went down, the Brewers have signed OF Lorenzo Cain to a five-year deal worth $80 million. It is interesting to note that that’s far this is been the longest and most expensive contract of this off-season.
The Brewers are legit. They have gone out and made moves necessary to make their team better. As a Cardinals fan I would be worried. I’m not saying that the Cardinals haven’t made improvements but it does not seem that their sense of urgency is very high. The Brewers on the other hand look like a team that is poised to win. If they manage to get better starters this team could definitely win the NL Central.
The Brewers have also been linked to top free-agent starting pitcher Yu Darvish. If the Brewers manage to pull this deal off, it could spell disaster for the Cardinals.
I’m hoping that the Cardinals still have something up their sleeves, but one thing is for certain… this is a 3 horse race.
