Shew Pitches Chiefs to Third Straight Win

Peoria, IL –Anthony Shew turned in another fantastic outing for the Peoria Chiefs, holding the Kane County Cougars to two hits over his eight innings of work in a 2-1 victory on Monday afternoon. The win improves the Chiefs to 34-30 in the second half and with six games remaining their magic number for a Wild Card spot is three.

Carlos Bustamante took the mound against the Chiefs, holding Peoria to just one hit through the first three innings. Peoria broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. J.R. Davis singled to center and stole second base. With two outs, Danny Hudzina singled to center field and Davis scored to give the Chiefs a 1-0 advantage.

Peoria added to their lead in the sixth against Cougars reliever Cal Becker. Kramer Robertson led off with a double down the left field line and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stefan Trosclair. With one out and the infield in, Hudzina grounded out to second but Robertson scored and extended the Chiefs lead to 2-0.

Anthony Shew held Kane County to one hit through his first six innings of work, retiring 17 straight Cougars from the first through seventh innings. Kane County finally got to Shew in the seventh inning. Yan Sanchez hit a ground ball to third and Hudzina overthrew first base for an error while allowing Sanchez to move to third. Ramon Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Sanchez and cut the Chiefs lead to 2-1.

Shew (4-0) went eight innings in the win, holding Kane County to one unearned run on two hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Max Almonte earned a save while throwing one scoreless inning, allowing one hit with a strikeout.
