The John Mayer: SOLO tour made a stop in St. Louis on Wednesday night and played to a packed house at Enterprise Center.
To think that one lone man on a stage with nothing but a guitar, a few amps, a piano, and a mic can fill a house like Mayer did is astonishing, but he seemed to do it effortlessly to a thirsty crowd of die hard fans. There was no fanfare or spectacular stage production. It was just him and his infectious, real-guy personality and raw talent.
The vast majority of the crowd stayed on their feet for the entire two hours and 15 minutes set that included 24 songs from his catalog, including cover bits of “Homeward Bound” by Simon & Garfunkel, “Somebody’s Baby” by Jackson Browne, and a full cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'” during the encore. He also ended “Shot In The Dark” with Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancin’ In The Dark”. In between songs, he entertained the crowd with stories and witty banter, along with flashback videos of a baby-faced Mayer from 2002 and one where he was promoting his “Continuum” tour from 2005. During his performance of “Changing”, he sat at the piano and played it and his guitar simultaneously, demonstrating the depth of his extraordinary talent.
The show was remarkable with the only exception of the noticeable absence of his hit “Gravity”. Nonetheless, fans left feeling satisfied.
