Memphis offense breaks out in win

Redbirds supply fireworks on Friday night in Indianapolis

by Alex Coil

The Memphis Redbirds evened the series at two in game four of a six-game series against the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night at Victory Field by a final score of 11-8.

Memphis started out on fire offensively, scoring three runs in each the second, third and fourth innings to roar out to a 9-0 lead. Designated hitter Conner Capel led the charge and extended his on-base streak to 27 games by reaching base four times, including two hits and a pair of walks. Capel also scored three runs in the high-scoring victory.

Redbirds power came from a pair of newly found sources. Second baseman Delvin Perez crushed his first career Triple-A home run with a three-run blast to start the scoring in the second. Third baseman Clint Coulter blasted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to dead center field.

Alec Burleson and Scott Hurst finished with three hits apiece, while Burleson tacked on a pair of RBI knocks in the sixth and eighth innings to pad the Redbirds’ lead.

Jordan Hicks appeared in the sixth and seventh innings for his second appearance of his MLB Rehab Assignment. The right-handed flame thrower topped out at 103 mph with his fastball to strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh and preserve a three-run Memphis lead.

Kyle Ryan (5-1) earned his team-leading fifth win with a clean inning in relief. Freddy Pacheco (S, 1) picked up his first save with Memphis this season, becoming the eighth Redbird arm to recorded a save this year.

The Memphis Redbirds (40-30) return to Victory Field to continue a six-game series against the Indianapolis Indians (34-34) on Saturday, June 25 for a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch.
