The Memphis Redbirds scored seven unanswered runs to take game five of a six-game series over the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night by a final score of 7-2, clinching the team’s second series victory of the season.

The Redbirds extended their winning streak to four games thanks to designated hitter Paul DeJong’s two-hit, three-RBI night. DeJong registered his first Triple-A hit of the season in the second inning, a double to drive in a pair to bring the score to 4-1.

On the mound, scheduled starting pitcher Connor Thomas dominated in relief. The left-hander tossed six innings and struck out a team season-high 11 batters to tie his career high. In total, Redbirds pitching struck out a new season-high 17 Norfolk hitters.

James Naile was quickly thrust into a starting role before first pitch. The right-hander tossed two innings without allowing an earned run and struck out four.

The Memphis four-game winning streak is the new season high for the team and brings the Redbirds to three games above .500, one fewer than the current season high of four.

At the plate, catcher Ivan Herrera and center fielder Scott Hurst registered two hits, in addition DeJong. Second baseman Nolan Gorman, left fielder Alec Burleson and third baseman Cory Spangenberg each added an RBI. Shortstop Evan Mendoza reached base four times on one hit and three walks to match a Memphis season high.

The Memphis Redbirds (19-16) return to Harbor Park for the fifth game of a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides (15-20) on Saturday, May 13 for a 5:35 p.m. CDT first pitch.
