Indiana State men’s basketball has signed Rob Martin (5-10/160/St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) to a national letter of intent for the upcoming season head coach Josh Schertz announced Wednesday.
“Rob is one of those players that the more you see him, the more you appreciate his game. He is a fierce competitor, incredibly savvy, and is as great a winner as I’ve recruited on the high school level,” Schertz said. “He has a championship DNA that he has brought to every team he’s been a part of, and that has been the driver of the incredible success his teams have enjoyed. He loves to work, loves to compete, and cares deeply about winning, so in a nutshell, he’s wired exactly like we want our players to be and is a perfect fit for our program.”
The St. Louis native led Christian Brothers to a Missouri 6A State Championship and a No. 2 ranking in the state. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 20.1 points, 4.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game as he led the Cadets to a 26-6 record.
A four-year player at CBC, he has helped the Cadets to an 88-30 record over his career, culminating with a state championship his senior season. He was named the Missouri 6A Player of the Year, the St. Louis Post Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year, 6A All-State Team. He earned 6A District II Player of the Year and All-District honors. Martin also earned Metro Catholic Conference Player of the Year and First Team accolades.
He is the second Sycamore to come from St. Louis and Christian Brothers in the last decade as ISU alum Jordan Barnes (2016-20) also played for the Cadets before a four-year career at Indiana State. Barnes finished his ISU career with 122 games played, including 90 starts at point guard while scoring 1,558 points — the ninth-most in program history.
Martin joins true freshman Robbie Avila (Oak Forest High School) who signed last fall. Four transfers have also signed with the ISU Basketball program for 2022-23 including Jayson Kent of Bradley, Courvoisier McCauley of DePaul, Cade McKnight of Truman State and Trenton Gibson of Tusculum.
