Redbirds Come Up Short in Bid for Sweep

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Memphis Redbirds fell short in their bid for a ninth-straight home win and a sweep of the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) with a 6-2 loss Monday night at AutoZone Park.

A win would have given Memphis (49-52) its longest home winning streak since also winning nine-in-a-row from August 18-30, 2010. All 10 Cub (44-59) non-pitchers had at least one hit in the game, including a pinch-hitter, while Anthony Garcia and Efren Navarro combined to go 5-for-8 for Memphis as the other eight Redbird batters were 0-for-24.

Garcia was 3-for-4 for his second-straight three-hit game, and he homered for the second-straight contest with a solo shot in the sixth. Navarro also homered, which was his sixth of the season and first as a Redbird.

Corey Baker gave up five runs in the first three innings, but he settled down and allowed only four hits in his final 4.0 innings of work, all of which were singles.

Josh Lucas pitched the final 2.0 frames and allowed one run on two hits.

With the pair of home runs in the game, Memphis extended its extra-base hit streak to 47-straight games.

Memphis welcomes Oklahoma City to AutoZone Park tomorrowFriday. Tomorrow’s 7:05 p.m. (CT) first pitch comes on King Cotton $1 Hot Dog Night, and it is another All-You-Can-Eat Thursday this week, which features hot dogs with a special ticket purchase. On Friday, the first 1,500 fans will receive a replica of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 1926 World Series ring, and fans may also purchase a Theme Ticket that includes a camouflage Redbirds hat.
