Redbirds Lose Rain-Soaked Game at Gwinnett

by

The Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) defeated the Memphis Redbirds on a rainy Friday night at Coolray Field. The Stripers scored the final eight runs of the game in an 8-2 victory. The game was called before the top of the seventh inning due to weather in the area.

Memphis (8-14) started strong, taking an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Matt Szczur in the top of the third. The 31-year-old has dingers in back-to-back games.

After that, it was all Gwinnett. The Stripers (13-9) scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead and never looked back, taking on a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth before the game was called.

Alex Jackson hit a two-run home run in the fifth. The catcher has four home runs and nine RBIs in the past two games combined.

Orlando Arcia had a three-hit night, capped off by a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Kipnis also added a three-run home run in the second, part of a multi-hit night for the former MLB All-Star.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
