Memphis Redbirds pitcher Sam Tuivailala was selected to the 2016 Triple-A All-Star Game and will represent the Redbirds alongside other Pacific Coast League stars in the 29th annual game against the stars of the International League.
The game will be held Wednesday, July 13 at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, North Carolina, home of the IL’s Charlotte Knights, and will be televised live on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. (CT). Redbirds manager Mike Shildt, a Charlotte native, will be a coach for the PCL All-Stars.
The winner will earn the right to have its champion play as the “home team” at the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game, taking place Tuesday, Sept. 20, at AutoZone Park in Memphis.
Tuivailala is tied for fourth in the PCL with 12 saves, and his 13.6 K/9 IP ratio is second in the league. In 28 appearances covering 31.0 innings, Tuivailala has struck out 47 and walked 15, and he is limiting opponents to a .231 batting average.
Since the series at Oklahoma City April 19-22, Tuivailala has had 18 scoreless appearances out of 23.
Tuivailala was also named a PCL All-Star in 2015, but he did not pitch due to a promotion to St. Louis.
In addition to the MLB Network television broadcast, the game will be available to subscribers of MiLB.tv and MLB.com At Bat, as well as on MLBNetwork.com. The Armed Forces Network will showcase the event, bringing the action to the U.S. Armed Forces stationed outside the United States on U.S. military installations and aboard U.S. Navy ships at sea. The game call will also be simulcast on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Channel 89.
