After a win against the Buffalo Sabres, the St. Louis Blues lost 4-3 to the Detroit Red Wings in overtime.
With the loss, the Blues have now lost four of their past six after Jake Allen stopped 28 of 36 shots faced.
The Blues gained a point with the overtime loss and move to 13-6-2 for 28 points. St. Louis stays in second place in the Central Division and is six points behind the Dallas Stars.
In the first period, Detroit wasted little time getting on the board first.
The Red Wings sent a dump in attempt deep in the Blues’ defensive zone. Detroit won the battle along the end boards as Brad Richards came away with the puck. Richards found Pavel Datsyuk all alone in front who scored over Allen’s shoulder to make it 1-0.
But, the Blues wasted little time responding.
Kevin Shattenkirk showed poise in delaying and holding onto the puck before threading a pass up to Kyle Brodziak. The pass sent Brodziak in all alone as he fired a shot over the glove of Jimmy Howard for his second goal of the season. The tally tied the game at one with 6:50 remaining in the first 20 minutes of play.
St. Louis got its first lead of the game off the blade of Jori Lehtera. Vladamir Tarasenko carried the puck along the side boards and pulled up to wait for reinforcements. Then, Tarasenko sent a cross-ice pass to Jay Bouwmeester at the point fresh off the bench. Bouwmeester had time and sent a low pass on the ice that Lehtera deflected past Howard to make it 2-1.
But, Detroit responded at the end of the period with a goal by Luke Glendening to tie the game at two. Detroit wasn’t done as it scored the lone goal in the second period as the rookie Dylan Larkin beat Allen to make it 3-2.
Then, with time winding down in the third period, Vladamir Tarasenko cashed in for the Blues.
Tarasenko decided to do it all himself as he carried it into the offensive zone. He deked past Niklas Kronwall toward the slot and made a second move the avoid the sweeping stick of Tomas Tatar. Tarasenko then fired a shot past Howard to tie the game at three with 2:10 left in regulation.
Unfortunately for the Blues, the goal felt short-lived as Detroit scored with just 18 seconds left in overtime.
Detroit was on the power play and Brad Richards picked up his second assist of the night as he passed across the blue line. Teemu Pulkkinen teed up a slap shot and ripped it past Allen for the win.
Next up for the Blues will be the Buffalo Sabres on the road Monday, Nov. 23. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
