Memphis Wins 60th Game with Five Runs in the Eighth

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The first-place Memphis Redbirds (60-35) picked up their 60th win of the season in come-from-behind fashion, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take down the Iowa Cubs (Cubs) Monday night at AutoZone Park, 6-4.

Edmundo Sosa had two RBI, as did Alex Mejia, whose two-run pinch-hit single in the eighth gave the Redbirds a 6-4 lead. Sosa scored the tying run when he crossed the plate as Oscar Mercado reached on an error by the shortstop. Patrick Wisdom was on base four times with a single and three walks.

Iowa scored two runs off Luke Weaver in the fourth inning, who was making a start in Memphis after 19 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Weaver struck out seven in 4.0 innings, and he did not issue a walk. The right-hander tossed 42 of his 56 pitches for strikes.

Tyler Webb followed Weaver and worked 2.0 scoreless innings, before the Cubs got two more runs off Matt Bowman to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

But the Redbirds then batted around and rallied for the five-spot in the eighth, before Edward Mujica slammed the door in the ninth for his 10th save of the year.

The Redbirds finished 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position but still earned the victory.

After three more games against Iowa, the Redbirds finish their seven-game homestand with three games against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Brewers) Friday-Sunday. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
