by St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed catcher Iván Herrera on the 10-day Injured List with lower back tightness, retroactive to June 19. Rookie catcher Nick Raposo (ra-POH-so) was selected from Memphis (AAA). Right-handed pitcher Keynan Middleton has been transferred from the 15-day to 60-day Injured List.

Raposo, 26, was signed by the Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent in June 2020 following a career at Wheaton (Mass.) College. The Providence, Rhode Island native began his career in Double-A Springfield in 2021 and played three seasons there before a promotion to Memphis in 2023 and has played in 47 games there in 2024. He was batting .187 with 5 HR, 22 RBI and six doubles when he was selected. Behind the plate, he retired seven of 43 attempted base stealers (16.3%).

When he first appears in a game, Raposo will become the seventh Cardinals player to make his Major League debut in 2024 and the first Cardinals player born in Rhode Island to appear in a Major League game since right-handed pitcher Phil Paine on September 19, 1958, against the San Francisco Giants at Sportsman’s Park. As of today, he will be the only active player on a 2024 Major League roster born in Rhode Island.

Herrera, 24, last played on Tuesday, June 18 at Miami and did not play on Thursday at the Rickwood Field game in Birmingham against the San Francisco Giants. He was batting .279 with 3 HR and 19 RBI at the time of injury.

Raposo will wear uniform number 70.
