The Cardinals have traded RHP Guillermo Zuñiga to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations.
Zuñiga, 25, appeared in two games in relief for St. Louis in 2023, making his Major League debut on May 2 against the Angels. In 29 games with Triple-A Memphis, he posted an 0-2 record with five saves and a 7.63 ERA (30.2 IP – 26 ER). Zuñiga held opponents scoreless in 18 appearances with the Redbirds last season, including a streak of seven consecutive scoreless innings from April 6 to April 26 in which he surrendered just three baserunners.
A native of Cartagena, Colombia, Zuñiga was originally signed by Atlanta as an international free agent on July 2, 2016. He also spent time in the Dodgers organization (2017-2022) before signing as a minor league free agent with the Cardinals on December 6, 2022. Zuñiga represented his home country of Colombia in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (3.0 IP – 0 ER) and six strikeouts in two relief appearances.
