Jon Heyman reports that 34-year old Sonny Gray is expected to finalize a 3-year deal worth $75m with the Cardinals today.

Gray, a 3-time All-Star, finished 2nd in the Cy Young last season behind the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole after posting a 2.79 ERA along with an MLB-best 2.83 FIP in 184 innings of work across 32 starts.  He struck out 183 hitters and only allowed 8 HRs. His 24.3% strikeout rate was a top-25 figure among qualified starters this season, while his 47.3% groundball rate ranked ninth among that same group.

This is his first free agent contract in his 10-year career. With Oakland, Yankees, Reds, and Twins, he was 98-85 with a 3.47 ERA and a 30 WAR.

Cardinals will lose their second-highest draft pick in the 2024 draft and $500k from their international signing pool.

Cardinals now are projected at a $202M tax payroll for 202.
