Springfield Cardinals Return Home

by Patty Murray

The Springfield Cardinals trip to Wichita last week turned out to be a tough one but it wasn’t without bright spots and a quick recovery after returning to Springfield.  Here are a few highlights:

Thomas Saggese has reached base in every game since joining the Springfield Cardinals on July 30, 2023.  Saggese was part of a trade with the Texas Rangers in which the Cardinals traded LHP Jordan Montgomer and Crist Stratton.  Saggese has the longest on-base streak as a Springfield Cardinals this season.  He has slugged 23 home runs and now leads all of the Double A with 95 RBI’s 143 hits and 85 runs.

Chandler Remond hit three home runs in the August 23 game against the Corpus Christi Hooks, leading the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory.  The next night, he followed with his 28th home run in a slug fest in which the Cardinals came out on top, 12-10.  Redmond is 6 HR’s away from breaking the all-time record of 59 and five HR’s away from breaking the Cardinal’s single season record.

Mike Antico hit his 15th home run of the season.  This puts him five HR’s away from the rare 20-20 season in which a player hits 20 home runs and steals 20 bases.

Victor Scott II contributed to the slugfest on August 24 by smacking a solo homerun.  Scott continues to be a base-stealing threat in addition to his power at the plate.

The Cardinals, playing as the Springfield Cashew Chickens, will finish out the homestand Sunday and be on the road next week to play the NW Arkansas Naturals.
