by St. Louis Cardinals

Prior to tonight’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals placed infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman on the 10-day Injured List with right wrist inflammation.  Rookie infielder José Fermín (pronounced fair-MEAN) has been recalled from Memphis (AAA) and will join the Cardinals in Chicago.

Edman, 28, was batting .239 with seven home runs and 29 RBI with a team-leading 14 stolen bases.  The switch-hitting multi-use player is on the Injured List for the first time in his career.  He had not taken an at-bat since July 4th and played the last two games as a defensive replacement.

Fermín, 24, was acquired by the Cardinals in a trade with Cleveland in November 2022.  He has played 17 games this season in the minor leagues between the Florida Complex League (R), Palm Beach (Low-A) and most recently Memphis (AAA), batting .180 (11-61) with three doubles, two home runs and four RBI.  The right-handed hitting Fermín is a native Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic.

Fermín, who will wear uniform No. 35, will be making his Major League debut with his first game appearance.

Edman is eligible to return from the Injured List on July 17 when the Cardinals are at home against the Miami Marlins.
