CARDINALS SELECT LEAHY FROM MEMPHIS; LIBERATORE OPTIONED

by St. Louis Cardinals

Prior to today’s game the Cardinals selected the contract of rookie right-handed pitcher, Kyle Leahy (lay-hee), from their Triple-A Memphis affiliate and optioned LHP Matthew Liberatore to Memphis.

Leahy, 26, was picked by the Cardinals in the 17th round (513th overall) of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft out of Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo. He would become the highest Cardinals draft pick on their current active roster edging out Lars Nootbaar, an 8th round draft pick in that 2018 class and highest on the 40-player roster ahead of RHP Jake Walsh, a 16th round draft pick in 2017.

In 28 games at Memphis, including three starts, Leahy was 3-3 with a 4.06 ERA striking out a batter an inning with 51 punch outs in 51.0 innings.

Leahy would become the sixth player from Colorado Mesa University to play in the Major Leagues, joining current Astros outfielder Bligh Madris, along with former World Series champions Sergio Romo (Giants) and Brendan Donnelly (Angels).

With his first Major League action, he will become the fourth Cardinals player to make his Major League debut this season joining Jordan Walker, Guillermo Zuñiga and Luken Baker.

Liberatore, 23, made nine starts with the Cardinals after his recall on May 17.

Leahy will wear uniform No. 64.
