by Andrew Honerkamp

The Lindenwood men’s hockey team (6-17-0) picked up a 5-2 win over the Stonehill Skyhawks (14-5-2) on Friday night at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo.

GAME OVERVIEW
Lindenwood compiled 16 shots on goal, while the Skyhawks fired nine at Trent Burnham in the opening period. The game continued scoreless for most of the period until Stonehill found the back of the net to grab a 1-0 lead late in the frame, which they would take into the locker room.

The Lions kept battling, looking for the equalizer. They got it at the 7:48 mark of the middle frame when Mitch Allard carried the puck into the Stonehill zone and found Caige Sterzer on the back door for the easy tap in, knotting the score 1-1. Ryan Finnegan also picked up an assist on the game-tying goal. The score remained tied until the 16:47 mark as Caleb Price found Hunter Johannes parked in front and he made it 2-1. The score was also assisted by Andy Willis. Just over a minute later, Kyle Jeffers extended the Lindenwood lead as the Lions went up 3-1. David Gagnon and Joe Prouty earned helpers on the goal. Lindenwood took that comfortable lead into the final frame.

In the third period, the Lions put another 16 shots on goal, which resulted in two more goals for the Lions. Gagnon finished off a sweet wrap-around, assisted by Finnegan and Jack Anderson, giving the Lions a commanding 4-1 lead. After Stonehill cut it to a 4-2 game, Drew Kuzma added his second goal of the year off a nice backhand feed from Finnegan, making the score 5-2. Lindenwood would hold on from there, picking up the victory by that score to open the series.
