Saint Louis opens the 2022-23 men’s basketball season on Monday night when it plays host to the Murray State Racers at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Billikens return four starters from last year’s team that went 23-12 and made the postseason NIT. Murray State welcomes a new(ish) head coach, 12 newcomers, and even joins a new conference after the Racers went 31-3 and won the Ohio Valley Conference a season ago.
Here are five facts in advance of Monday’s game against Murray State:
1 // This is the 108th season of Billikens men’s basketball. The Billikens picked up the program’s 1,500th win last year in the quarterfinals of the A-10 Men’s Basketball Championship against St. Bonaventure. This is the Billikens’ 15th season playing in Chaifetz Arena, where they own a 182-65 record.
2 // Yuri Collins, the NCAA assists leader a year ago, was named to the 2023 Bob Cousy Award Preseason Watch List. The Cousy Award, which is sponsored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizes the top point guard in men’s NCAA Division I basketball (read more).
3 // Saint Louis is 82-25 all-time in season openers, including a 12-2 mark in season debuts at Chaifetz Arena. SLU head coach Travis Ford is 23-2 in season openers in his career, 5-1 during his time at SLU.
4 // Murray State head coach Steve Prohm is in his second stint with the Racers. He coached at Murray State for four years from 2011-15 before serving the last six seasons at Iowa State. Prohm replaced Matt McMahon, who left for LSU after last season. In addition to having a new coach, the Racers have a new conference as 2022-23 marks their first year in the Missouri Valley Conference after spending many years in the Ohio Valley Conference.
5 // The Billikens, who were picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Conference race, had a league-four players earn preseason A-10 honors. Yuri Collins was named to the A-10 preseason first team, while Gibson Jimerson and Javonte Perkins landed on the second team. Francis Okoro was a voted to the third team.
