OMAHA, Neb. – Saint Louis picked up an impressive road victory on Friday night, defeating the seventh-ranked Creighton Bluejays 3-2 in a thriller at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Billikens improve to 1-2 with the win, while Creighton falls to 2-1. The Bluejays had been one of the hottest teams in the nation coming into the match. Despite entering the season unranked, Creighton vaulted all the way up to No. 7 in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll after outscoring its opponents 12-1 on the opening week of play.
It was SLU’s first road win against a top-10 opponent since Sept. 20, 2014, when it also defeated Creighton, then ranked No. 3, at Morrison Stadium.
On Friday, the Billikens got goals from Kevin Komodi, John Klein and Alberto Suarez. Klein and Komodi also registered an assist for three-point games. The Bills only put four shots on goal and found the mark on three of them.
Creighton opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Saint Louis responded with the equalizer in the 20th minute when Kevin Komodi buried a PK. It was Komodi’s first goal of the season, his fourth at SLU, and the seventh of his collegiate career.
Klein put the Billikens up in the 31st minute when he scored off of a feed from Max Floriani. It was the 23rd goal of Klein’s career, and the first career point for Floriani.
Suarez put SLU on top 3-1 on assists by Klein and Komodi. It was Suarez’ first goal as a Billiken.
Creighton pulled to within one at 3-2 in the 74th minute, but the SLU defense stood tall down the stretch for the win. Yuval Sade recorded six saves for his first career victory between the posts.
The Billikens return to action next Friday, Sept. 9, against SMU at Hermann Stadium. The match originally scheduled for Monday against UIC has been canceled.
