If you’ve never experienced Boris you’re missing out. Whether that’s listening to one of the 24 studio albums (soon to be 25 with LφVE & EVφL on October 4) they’ve produced during the past 27 years or being engulfed in one of their live concerts. Since forming in 1992, Boris has been redefining music ever since. This experimental, industrial, metal, goth, dream-like trio will burst through any type of genre you try to add them to.
On Wednesday night at Delmar Hall, Atsuo Mizuno strode onto stage, drumstick held high, gazing at the zealous crowd, encouraging them to cheer louder and louder. Continuing the theatric build up behind his drum set while guitarist/bassist Takeshi Ohtani and guitarist/keyboardist Wata set up.
The show started off with the heavy, slow, noisy “The Power” from the 2017 Dear album and slipped fluidly into the dreamy, trance-inducing “Love,” the first single off their forthcoming album. The night continued with Mizuno hitting the drums hard, setting the pace from steady to fast but at the same time a swirling, frantic, stillness. Ohtani’s double-necked bass/guitar and Wata’s guitar added melodic, noisy layers to create an otherworldly atmosphere.
At the end of the concert, Boris had, momentarily, sated the room of hard-core, devoted fans who were left completely in awe.
Opening the night was the heavy, hard-hitting, head-banging Uniform. Formed in 2013 in New York, this trio self-describes as “vicious post-industrial dystopian cyber-punk.”
