NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The Memphis Redbirds (81-56) dropped the series opener to the Nashville Sounds (Athletics) 5-1, Friday night in Nashville. This is the last series both teams will play in the regular-season.
Memphis starter Austin Warner took the loss for the Redbirds. The lefty threw four innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three batters. Warner’s biggest mistake came in the first inning when he allowed a three-run home run to former Redbird Anthony Garcia. He allowed another run in the second inning before throwing two shutout frames.
The Redbirds collected one run on seven hits in the ballgame. Alex Mejia drove in the lone run with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Lane Thomas went 3-for-4 in the game and Edmundo Sosa went 2-for-4. Rangel Ravelo collected the other hit for Memphis. The Redbirds went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, and left six men on base.
Three Memphis relievers combined to throw the final four innings of the game. Giovanny Gallegos threw two scoreless innings immediately following Warner’s exit. Andrew Morales threw one inning, allowing one run before John Brebbia threw one scoreless inning. Memphis pitchers combined to strike out six batters in the game.
Memphis and Nashville will play three more games in this series to conclude the regular-season. The Redbirds will begin the playoffs on the road on Sept. 5 before coming home for game three on Sept. 7. Redbirds playoff tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.memphisredbirds.com/
