It’s the top of the 8th inning. Cardinals are down 1-0. Carpenter is up at the plate with Bader on third, and Garcia on 2nd. Adam Ottavino throws a slider in the dirt, Carpenter walks, and suddenly Bader is racing home as the ball gets away. Cardinals tie the game and it’s now 1-1.
Then the bottom of the 8th happens.
Cardinals relief pitchers Hudson, Cecil, and Mayers record 1 out, while giving up 9 hits and 8 earned runs. Luke Weaver was brought in and was able to record the final 2 outs, but the damage was done.
This loss was demoralizing, but the Cardinals still have an opportunity to win their 9th straight series this afternoon against the Rockies. The Cardinals send out rookie Austin Gomber to take on Tyler Anderson of Colorado.
In 4 starts this August, Gomber is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA over 20 innings. He has 18 strikeouts with 12 walks over these starts.
Tyler Anderson has also made 4 starts in the month of August and is 0-3 with a 9.15 ERA over 20.2 innings. He has 22 strikeouts and 7 walks.
St. Louis now sits at 72-58 after the loss last night and is 0.5 games ahead of Arizona, Colorado, and Milwaukee for the first wild card spot. They also sit 4 games back of the Cubs in the NL Central.
The Cardinals certainly have the edge from a starting pitcher standpoint. St. Louis has had a case of bad innings in this series. The Rockies have 14 runs in the series and 13 of them have come from 2 innings.
Prediction
St. Louis wins 5-2.
Gomber goes 6 and gives up 2 runs. Bullpen rebounds from rough night to win 9th straight series.
Game starts at 2:10 CT on FSMW
