NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The Memphis Redbirds (77-52) avoided the sweep, beating the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Miami) 5-3, Thursday night in New Orleans. It was the final game the two will play against one another this season.
The Redbirds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the game, scoring runs in the second, third, and fifth innings. New Orleans scored three in the sixth before Memphis tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Despite their win tonight, New Orleans won the season-series over Memphis 9-7.
Memphis hit two home runs in the game. Adolis Garica went deep in the second inning, hitting a solo home run. It was his first home run since returning from St. Louis, and his 22nd of the season. Patrick Wisdom drove in two with his 15th home run of the season in the third inning. It was Wisdom’s first game back with the team since making his Major League debut with the Cardinals.
Max Schrock and Ramon Urias both had multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Pinch-hitter Alex Mejia drove in the final Memphis run on a groundout in the eighth.
Memphis starter Chris Ellis threw four shutout innings in his return to the starting rotation. He allowed four hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters.
Tyler Webb, Giovanny Gallegos, and Andrew Morales combined to the throw the final five innings of the game. Webb threw 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out two. Gallegos pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run, while striking out three batters. Andrew Morales threw the final two innings, earning the win. He is 2-3 with a 3.32 ERA this season.
