It was announced earlier today that the Cardinals had claimed Matt Adams off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

The #STLCards have activated RHP Carlos Martínez from the 10-day disabled list and claimed former Cardinals 1B Matt Adams off waivers from the Nationals. Infielder Patrick Wisdom was optioned to Memphis (AAA) & OF Dexter Fowler has been moved from the 10-day DL to the 60-day DL.

Adams had previously played with the Cardinals from 2011-2017 being used primarily as a first baseman but also spending time in the outfield in 2017. This season for the Nationals he has appeared in 48 games at 1B with 16 appearances in the outfield.  He currently owns a .257 batting average but has 18 home runs and an .842 OPS.

It’s still under speculation as to what his role will.be for the Cardinals but with his power potential from the left side he should see some regular at-bats. Matt Carpenter has taken most of the time at 1B recently but could realistically move to 3B for Adams to play more regularly, but that type of move limits Gyorko and Wong from playing as much.

He posts a 1 DRS playing 1B while posting -1 DRS playing in the outfield.

Adams shared his thoughts with Jim Hayes on coming back to St. Louis.

Matt Adams is thrilled about returning to the Cardinals. He told me ” I always had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to come back. I didn’t expect it to happen so soon.”. @BigCityForReal #STLCards

I’m looking forward to seeing Big City back in a Cardinals Uniform. He should be with the club in the next few days and as early as tomorrow!

Thanks for Reading!
