In their perpetually-penned history, the St. Louis Surge professional basketball franchise has competed in the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) National Championship title game the past four years.
The locals, who claimed the governing body’s trophy in 2014 and 2016, have the opportunity this weekend on their home court to punch their ticket for a another appearance at the WBCBL finale.
St. Louis (8-2) hosts arch rival Midwest Flyers Elite (7-2) Saturday at Washington University’s Field House (330 Big Bend Blvd. – St. Louis, MO). Tipoff is at 5:05 p.m.
The winner of the WBCBL Midwest Division title game gains automatic entry to the League’s eight-team national tournament held in Charlotte, North Carolina the first weekend of August.
The Surge claimed their fourth straight win, and kept their Wash U historical home record unblemished (10-0), in Sunday’s dominant 123-44 victory over the Music City Icons. In front of 1,600 rabid fans, St. Louis collected a mind-bending seventeen three-pointers and sported multiple double-digit uncontested point rallies for the duke.
From the get-go, the Surge had a “pedal to the metal” philosophy.
“That’s our mind set for every game,” reflected forward Jaleesa Butler after the win. “We want to get at it. We want to go after all the teams. We just like the competition.”
With six treys made, Brittany Carter topped the scoring with 34 points, followed by Kelsey McClure’s 18 off the bench.
Saturday’s foe, Elsberry, Missouri-based Midwest Flyers Elite, gained a ten-point win (90-80) over the Surge at home in mid-May but then arguably had their worst performance of the season in a 103-61 setback at the early-June re-match at Wash U.
Without a doubt, the Elite looks to claim the win in the rubber match and the Surge is preparing for the challenge.
“It’s always live when we play the Flyers,” said Butler of the rivalry. “We’re excepting to get a victory but we’re also expecting them to put their foot to the metal, too, so we’re definitely ready.”
Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID and free for children five and under.
