Haylye Markway, who has served the past two years as graduate student manager for the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team, has been named a Billikens’ assistant coach.
“Haylye Markway is one of the brightest young coaches in the country,” SLU head coach Katie Shields said. “During her time as a graduate student manager in our program, she demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to the success of our program and to each student-athlete. As Haylye moves into the assistant coach role, she will make an immediate impact in recruiting as she is outstanding at building relationships and relentless in her work rate to attract top talent to our program.
“Haylye is an outstanding role model for our student-athletes as a tremendously hard worker on and off the field,” Shields said. “Her focus on character development and commitment to our core values of educating, competing and building community make her a perfect fit for our program.”
“I am absolutely thrilled to have been given this opportunity to continue my coaching development at Saint Louis University,” said Markway, a St. Louis native and Nerinx Hall High School graduate. “I loved my first two years at SLU and am so grateful to athletics director Chris May, senior associate athletics director Janet Oberle and Katie Shields for their belief in me and their guidance. This is an absolute dream, and I am excited to chase an Atlantic 10 Conference championship this fall.”
The Billikens produced a 29-7-4 overall record and a 14-3-3 A-10 ledger during Markway’s first two seasons at SLU. Among her duties as graduate student manager were developing and implementing daily team and individual training sessions, organizing individual video breakdown and presentation, and managing the team’s social media accounts. Markway also has coached and served as a counselor at numerous camps and clinics.
Markway started all but three games during her career as a midfielder at Quincy University. She scored nine goals, including four game-winners, and added seven assists. As a senior co-captain, Markway was selected to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference third team and the NSCAA All-Midwest Region third team.
In the classroom, Markway garnered NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Midwest Region third-team plaudits and was a four-time GLVC Academic All-Conference selection. She capped her academic career by receiving the GLVC Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award.
Markway helped the Hawks post a 56-16-14 overall record and a 40-11-8 GLVC mark from 2012 to 2015. She was a member of Quincy teams that made NCAA Division II Championship appearances in 2012, 2013 and 2015 in addition to capturing GLVC regular-season and tournament crowns in 2012 and 2013. The 2013 squad was undefeated through regular-season and conference tournament play, finishing 18-1-4 overall and 12-0-3 in the GLVC.
At Nerinx Hall, Markway collected first-team All-Conference and second-team All-Metro accolades as a senior and was a second-team All-Conference choice as a junior. She was the Markers’ Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior.
Markway earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and is pursuing an MBA at Saint Louis.
