O’FALLON, MO–The River City Rascals continued their winning streak on Wednesday night, beating the Schaumburg Boomers 2-0 for their fourth straight win to remain undefeated at home on the season. The team has now won seven of their last eight games after the win, their second straight shutout. Starter Hector Hernandez (1-0) was excellent in his second start, going six innings and allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out three behind an impressive defensive display from the Rascals.
Zach Lavy and Gerrion Grim provided the only runs of the night, each connecting on a solo home run in the second inning. The Rascals left runners in scoring position in each of the last four innings of the game, but in the end it wouldn’t matter.
Steven Ridings (1-2) took the hard-luck loss for the Boomers, allowing the two runs through 5.1 innings, while striking out four. Three Boomers pitchers recorded an out in the bottom of the sixth, in which the Rascals had runners and second and third with just one out only to stike out twice in a row to end the frame.
Cody Mincey earned the save, his second of the season, despite allowing a two-out, two-strike double to pinch-hitter Dylan Jones in the ninth to bring the tying runner to the plate. Mincey was able to retire Sean Godfrey to seal the win.
Braxton Martinez had two hits on the night for the Rascals, including a sixth inning double. Rascals’ 2nd baseman Stephen Kerr singled in the third inning to keep his hitting streak alive at 10 games.
The Rascals (7-3) look for the sweep tomorrow night against the Boomers (3-8). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm CT. Josh Kimborowicz is expected to make the start for the Rascals, his third of the season.
