STL Surge Grounded In Season B-Ball Opener

by Brian Ledford

(ELSBERRY, MO) The St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball franchise launched their 2018 campaign Sunday night against in–state rival Midwest Flyers.

In the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) battle held at Elsberry High School, the Flyers posted a 33-23 third quarter, round-ball attack that contributed to their 90-82 victory over the Surge.

The contest saw both perennial WBCBL National Championship entrants display the competitive skill sets that should make both early favorites for another repeat trip later this summer.

St. Louis (0-1) started the new season with a solid defensive start and possessed a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The script was flipped in the second stanza as the hostesses utilized a 25-15 push that resulted in the Flyers’ 37-32 lead at intermission.

The Flyers continued the momentum in the third quarter and the aforementioned 33-23 frame pushed Elsberry’s lead to 70-55 heading into the final stretch.

To their credit, the Surge outscored the Flyers in the final frame, 27-20, but the deficit was to deep to reach and the Flyers (1-0) netted the eight-point victory that placed them at the top of the WBCBL Midwest Region standings.

The pair will have a highly-anticipated rematch at the Surge’s home opener at Washington University on Saturday, June 9. Information on individual tickets and season passes are available by going to this link.
