THE BASICS
• Jackie Kemph’s running 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime lifted Saint Louis to a come-from-behind, 72-69 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over George Washington Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
• The Billikens improved to 11-10 overall and 5-3 in the A-10. The Colonials fell to 9-11, 4-4.
• Maddison Gits posted her sixth double-double of the season, and third in a row, with 12 points and a career-high-tying and game-high 17 rebounds, including a game-high five offensive boards.
• Kerri McMahan provided a huge spark off the bench, scoring 15 points – her best as a Billiken and just one point shy of her overall career high – and grabbing a season-high-tying six rebounds.
• Jackie Kemph had 13 points and five assists and committed just one turnover while playing all but one minute.
• Jenny Vliet tallied 13 points – including a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the extra session that gave SLU a 69-68 lead – and collected seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
• Trailing 52-41 with 1:25 left in the third quarter, SLU outscored GW 17-6 the rest of regulation.
FIRST QUARTER
• Despite committing seven turnovers, the Billikens built a four-point lead before settling for an 18-16 lead after one quarter.
• Six different players scored for SLU in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
• George Washington began the period with a 7-0 run for its largest first-half lead, 23-18.
• The Colonials remained in front until a three-point play by Gits with 2:48 left tied it at 28.
• GW regained the lead on its next possession and took a 34-31 edge to the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Colonials built their 11-point cushion with a 13-4 run.
• However, Jordyn Frantz knocked down a 3-pointer with just under a minute left to spark the Billikens’ 17-6 regulation-ending spurt.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Saint Louis pulled even at 54 on a Frantz bucket with 2:57 to play, then took a two-point lead on a basket by Gits at the 1:18 mark.
• After GW made one of two from the line, two Kemph free throws put the Bills in front 58-55 with 20 seconds remaining.
• Mei-Lyn Bautista’s 3-pointer with 10 ticks left tied it for the Colonials, and both teams missed potential game-winning shots in the final seconds.
OVERTIME
• Neither team led by more than two points until Kemph’s game-winning shot, and there were five lead changes.
• GW led 68-66 following Brianna Cummings’ three-point play with 19 seconds remaining, only to see Vliet bury a triple from the left corner with 11 seconds left to give the Billikens a one-point lead.
• Cummings was fouled on the ensuing possession. She sank the first free throw to tie it at 69, missed the second, and Gits pulled down the rebound.
• Gits left the ball with Kemph, who raced down the floor and launched the game-winner on the move, just outside the 3-point arc.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
• This was the Billikens’ first overtime game this season.
• Saint Louis earned a 45-31 rebounding advantage, including a 15-6 edge on the offensive glass.
• Gits has five double-digit rebounding totals over the last seven games.
• Kemph registered a team-high five assists.
• McMahan committed just one turnover while playing 35 minutes.
