NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Jack Flaherty struck out seven in 7.1 innings, and Stephen Piscotty and Patrick Wisdom homered in a 3-2 Memphis Redbirds win over the Nashville Sounds (Athletics) Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.
The division-champion Redbirds are now 82-42 on the season and one win from tying the 2000 club for the most victories in a season in franchise history. Memphis has won 36 of its last 47 games and is 42-19 at AutoZone Park this season.
Piscotty hit his fourth home run in six games as a Redbird in the sixth inning after Wisdom hit his 26th of the year in the second. Wisdom’s two-run shot ties him with David Freese (2008) and Allen Craig (2009) for the ninth-most in a season in Redbirds history.
Flaherty spun a gem on the mound, holding the Sounds scoreless into the eighth. He put down eight-straight Nashville hitters through one out in the eighth inning, before he gave up two singles to end his night. Ryan Sherriff came on and issued a walk and got a flyout, and Josh Lucas followed him to escape the eighth after Nashville plated two runs.
But Lucas turned around and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with Memphis leading 3-2 to finish the game and pick up his 14th save of the season. Flaherty is now 5-2 on the year and has not allowed more than three earned runs in eight-straight starts.
Rangel Ravelo had two hits for the Redbirds, as did Gabriel Lino.
The two teams continue their series tonight at 7:05. The Redbirds’ current eight-game homestand runs through next Tuesday.
