(ST. LOUIS, MO) The St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball franchise utilized an energized fourth quarter en route to Saturday victory that simultaneously maintained their undefeated streak and claimed a top seed for the upcoming post-season.

The Surge, the defending national champions of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL), topped Midwest Division rival Midwest Flyers Elite 90-79 at Washington University’s Field House in a fourth quarter that saw St. Louis (9-0) zap their opponents with a 38-25 output on the scoreboard.

The 11-point duke resulted in the Surge’s twelfth consecutive WBCBL-sanctioned victory and also secured a top seed in the upcoming Midwest Division tournament held later this summer.

The Surge’s win wasn’t easy as their Elsberry-based opponents (7-2) gave the locals fits throughout. After one quarter, St. Louis trailed 16-12 but utilized a 26-21 stanza in the second to hold a tight 38-37 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, the Elite outscored the Surge 17-14 and sported a 54-52 edge heading into the final stanza.

In the opening seconds of the fourth, Surge veteran Jaleesa Butler’s lay-up tied the score 54-54. A 9-9 push over the next seven minutes kept the game deadlocked, 63-63 with 5:45 left. Jordan Jones’ glass-kisser fifteen seconds later gave the Surge a 65-63 edge.

The momentum was aided by Patrice Butler’s lay-up at the 4:10 mark that pushed the Surge’s lead to 67-63. Rebecca Harris added a 10-foot floater with 6:45 left that finished the Surge’s 6-0 rally that gave the ballers a 69-63 edge.

Down the stretch, successful Surge free throws helped widen the winning differential. St. Louis was paced by Harris’ 23 and Butler’s 22 in the Surge’s 90-79 win over the Flyers.

St. Louis continues their home campaign at Washington University this weekend. For more information on the Surge, go to their official website.
