Redbirds Rally with Three in the Eighth for 5-4 Win

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Two days after the Round Rock Express (Rangers) scored seven runs with two outs, the Memphis Redbirds turned the table and scored all five of their runs with two away in a 5-4 win Monday night in Round Rock, Texas.

With the win, Memphis improves to 43-27 on the season and is 16 games over .500 for the first time since Aug. 2014.

Memphis opened the scoring with a two-spot in the top of the third, thanks to a two-out, two-run single by Carson Kelly that plated Breyvic Valera and Randal Grichuk.

From there Round Rock (34-37) scored the next four runs, with three coming against Jack Flaherty and another coming off Josh Zeid. Flaherty finished working 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, with three walks, three strikeouts, and two home runs.

The Express kept a 4-2 lead into the top of the eight, when the Redbirds scored three runs and took a 5-4 lead which held until the final score. Kelly singled with two outs to moveLuke Voit to third, and Patrick Wisdom followed with a walk. Nick Martini singled up the middle to tie the game at four, and Alex Mejia followed with a single of his own to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Redbirds.

Miguel Socolovich pitched a perfect eighth and struck out two, and Josh Lucas also had two strikeouts in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Zeid picked up the win after relieving Flaherty. He is now 3-2 on the season.

The Redbirds and the Express finish their series tomorrow night at 7:05. After an off-day on Wednesday, Memphis heads to Omaha for four games ThursdaySunday.
