Over the past year and a half, the “friendship” between Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens was one of the most entertaining stories in all of WWE. Week after week they were a blend of a highly competitive duo and a comedic team.
The partnership began when Jericho assisted Owens in winning the WWE Universal Championship after Finn Balor’s injury led to the title being declared vacant. During Owens’ feud against Seth Rollins, Jericho would continuously stand up for Owens, whether by interfering in his matches on his behalf, or just by being in his corner.
But without a doubt, the biggest and most popular thing to come out of the duo was the “List of Jericho”. It was originally used to complain about former RAW general manager Mick Foley, but it became so popular with fans that everyone wanted to be put on “the list”. As time went on, however, many began to wonder if Owens could truly win a big time match without the help of his “best friend”. At Roadblock: End of the Line, Roman Reigns faced off against Owens without Jericho. Near the end of the match, Jericho entered the ring and attacked Owens.
It looked as if the friendship ended, but it was a ploy by the two of them so Owens could retain his title.
People wondered when the friendship would end. After accepting a title match against Goldberg on Owens’ behalf, Jericho held a “Festival of Friendship” when RAW was in Vegas. It was there that Owens turned on him, ending the duo and friendship. After missing three weeks due to the attack, Jericho returned to distract Owens at Fastlane, causing Owens to lose the title to Goldberg.
At Wrestlemania 33, Jericho will be putting up his United States Championship on the line against his former friend, and this is definitely one of the matches that could steal the show. Last year at Wrestlemania, Jericho and A.J Styles had one of the best matches in years in WWE. Despite being in his mid-40’s, Y2J still has a lot left in the tank, and this Sunday, the audience will see that showcased once again.
