The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s series opener in Cincinnati that they have activated infielder Jhonny Peralta (left thumb) and first baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss (left ankle) from the 15-day disabled list and added newly-acquire left-handed pitcher Zach Duke to the team’s 25-man active roster.
In order to make room for the three player additions, the team today placed All-Star shortstop Aledmys Diaz (right thumb fracture) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1, and optioned left-handed pitcher Dean Kiekhefer and outfielder Randal Grichuk to Memphis (AAA).
Peralta, who missed the start of the 2016 season due to a left thumb ligament injury, was batting .221 with 5 home runs and 13 RBI in 30 games before returning to the D.L. on July 18. Moss, who was leading the Cardinals with his 17 HR’s at the time he was injured on July 4, is batting .256 with 40 RBI in 75 games. Duke, acquired via trade from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, is 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA in a Major League-leading 53 relief appearances.
Duke has been assigned uniform no. 29.
