Brayan Pena rejoins Springfield on Rehab Assignment

Springfield, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that Cardinals C Brayan Pena is scheduled to resume his Rehab Assignment with the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field this week.

Pena is scheduled to join Springfield on Thursday, June 23 when the Cardinals start a four-game series against the Arkansas Travelers at 7:10pm.Thursday’s game features the American National Etched Pint Glass Giveaway (2,000) and is also a Klement’s “Buck a Brat” Night with Klement’s bratwursts for just a buck. Gates open at 6:10pm.

Pena, 34, is in his first season with the Cardinals after signing as a free agent on December 7, 2015. He had joined Springfield for the first round of his Rehab Assignment from June 7 – 12, before rehabbing with AAA-Memphis from June 15 – 20.

The 11-year Major League veteran broke into the big leagues in 2005 with the Atlanta Braves and has compiled a .260 batting average with 23 home runs, 164 RBIs and 466 hits through 629 career games with the Braves, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds. His career batting average is 2nd only to C Victor Martinez among switch-hitting catchers in the Major Leagues.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Pena spent the last two seasons as the primary catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, suiting up in 223 games from 2014-15. Last season, Pena not only notched a career-high 91 hits, but also led all National League catchers with an incredible .999 fielding percentage, committing only one error in 715 total chances.
